While selling my products at an outdoor festival, a teenage boy walking past my booth stopped dead in his tracks when he read my sign "Lotions, Potions, and Notions".
"Do you have anything to make a girl fall in love with me?" he asked.
"Well... I do have these Love Charms" I replied as I handed him one of my little red charm bags. "What am I supposed to do with this?" he scoffed. "Throw it at her?!" He handed it back then stormed off, shaking his head.
Silly boy. What did he expect? Was he looking for some magic love potion that he could slip into her drink? Only the young would consider it a good idea to trick a girl into loving him. Hopefully, with age comes wisdom and he will one day realize that genuine love can't be forced and must be given freely. And more importantly - that we must be ready for receiving such love; that we are honest and open, vulnerable and trusting.
That is why my Love Charms are intended for the person seeking love - not the object of such love. They are intended to help open one's heart to let love enter. They contain aromatherapy scents that foster feelings of harmony, peace, relaxation & sensuality. They contain a rose quartz crystal which is the stone of universal love, and dried rose petals, chamomile, and peppermint which have long been associated with love and romance. And it's all bundled up in a red bag with a pink ribbon - the colours of love and passion. You can place the sachet under your pillow, set it on your bedside table, or carry it on your person. If the boy had more patience, I could have explained this to him. But I suspect he was looking for more immediate results - unrequented love is awfully painful. Poor boy.
Love Potions should never be used on the unsuspecting and work best when both parties consent to enjoying the potion together. With Valentine's Day approaching, I thought I would share some recipes for Love Potions that you can make at home to enjoy with your special person. If you don't have the ingredients in your house, please feel free to drop by the apothecary as I always have them in stock. I'll also be making a few of these myself and will have them available for purchase in time for Valentine's Day.
LOVE POTION #1
Aphrodisiac Massage Oil
Mix together 1/4 c vegetable oil (Olive, sunflower, grapeseed, and almond oils work well) with
1 ml (36 drops) of sweet orange essential oil
.5 ml (20 drops) lavender essential oil
10 drops Patchouli essential oil
2 drops Ylang Ylang essential oil.
If you want to make it tingly, you can add a few drops of peppermint oil. And if you want it warming, add a few drops of cinnamon oil.
LOVE POTION #2
Warming Passion Wine
Mix together:
1 bottle of red wine
2 sticks of cinnamon
6 cloves
1 sliced orange
2 tb. sugar
2 star anise
Warm gently over low heat for 22 minutes, being careful to not let it bubble (and lose your alcohol). Enjoy while warm.
LOVE POTION #3
Romantic Bath Tea
½ cup dried rose petals ½ cup dried lavender blossom ¼ cup dried chamomile 10 drops lavender or rose essential oil (optional)
Mix all herbs together in a large mixing bowl. Using a piece of fabric or cheesecloth, tie the herbs into a bag. Be sure to leave the bags somewhat large so that the herbs can infuse and are not too tightly packed together. Drop a few drops of essential oil on the exterior of the bag, and drop it into the bath. This is an excellent bath to enjoy before a romantic night, or to share with the one you love. Make it even more special with candles, music, and floating rose petals.
